Crown and Bridge
Both crown and bridges are permanent prosthetic options. Unlike removable device such as denture which you can take out and clean daily, crown and bridge are cemented onto existing teeth or implants.
Dental Crown:
A dental crown is a type of tooth restoration that fully covers a damaged tooth to protect the remaining tooth structure from fracture. Crowns are often used to improve strength or appearance of teeth. Crown can be also placed over an implant for tooth like shape, structure and function.
A Crown may be used where:
- Decayed tooth that is too large for a normal filling to be placed.
- Root canal treated tooth.
- A tooth which is severely cracked or fractured.
- When a particular tooth is used as support for bridge.
- To cover an implant.
- Discolored or poorly shaped tooth.
Types of Crowns:
- Porcelain fixed metal crown.
- Zirconia Crowns.
- Others like full metal, acrylic.
Bridges:
This is a tooth replacement option consisting of multiple crowns fixed together that serves to replace a space where one or more teeth are missing.
Bridges are cemented to the natural teeth or implants surrounding the empty space these teeth which serves as an anchor for bridges are called as Abutments.
How long does the crown or bridges last?
Crowns and Bridges can last a lifetime. If maintained well. Most important step to take to ensure the longevity of the crown and bridge is to practice good oral hygiene. A bridge can lose its support if the teeth or bone holding it in place are damaged by dental disease. Brushing twice daily and flossing will help us to maintain oral hygiene. Dental checkups and professional cleanings are recommended once in 6 months.
